The Cyber Essentials scheme has been developed as part of the UK’s National Cyber Security Programme. It is now mandatory for central government contracts that involve handling personal information and providing certain ICT products and services.
Cyber Essentials offers a sound foundation of basic hygiene measures that all types of organisations can implement and build upon. Correctly implementing these measures can significantly reduce an organisation’s cyber security risk exposure, providing cost-effective, basic cyber security for organisations of all sizes.
What is Cyber Essentials?
The Cyber Essentials scheme aims to help protect organisations – of all sizes – against the rising threats of the digital landscape. Through a self-assessment model, Cyber Essentials provides your organisation with protection against a variety of the most common cyber-attacks. The scheme requires an organisation to self-assess their security against an assessor company’s questionnaire, which is then verified and must then be signed by a senior executive.
Proving that your organisation will not fall prey to some of the simpler cyber threats out there will, in turn, mitigate the risk of being targeted by some of the more complex and malicious threats in operation.
Cyber Essentials Plus
Cyber Essentials PLUS, while still applying the same ‘simplicity of approach’ Cyber Essentials methodology, and while also aiming to achieve the same objectives in terms of the protections that need to be put in place, has one major difference to Cyber Essentials. That is the fact that, for a Cyber Essentials PLUS certificate, a hands-on technical verification of said security measures is also required. Cyber Essentials PLUS is an enhanced cyber security certification.
How can Cyber Essentials help my business?
The purpose of Cyber Essentials is to improve your organisations’ cyber security posture. Annual certification is required and provides organisations with an excellent opportunity to ensure that they are as protected against the constantly evolving threat landscape as possible.
Cyber Essentials Badge
By having the Cyber Essentials badge on display, you are signalling to current and potential customers that your business is protected against around 80% of cyber threats out there. This provides a level of trust and assurance from the customer perspective by displaying your organisation takes cyber security seriously and, therefore, can be trusted to hold sensitive/lucrative customer data.
Bidding for Government Contracts
Cyber Essentials allows an organisation to bid for government contracts. The UK government, in an effort to ensure its own supply chain is as secure as possible, has decreed that only organisations who are compliant with the Cyber Essentials scheme may bid on contracts which involve the handling of sensitive information and the provision of certain technical services.
Essentially, the government won’t do business with you unless they know you are secure from cyber-attack.
Do I need to renew my Cyber Essentials certification?
Yes. In order to ensure that your organisation is compliant with the Cyber Essentials scheme, annual renewal of your Cyber Essentials (and Cyber Essentials PLUS) certification is required.
