Following the acquisition of Kivu Consulting by Quorum Cyber in December 2024, Kivu’s co-founder Winston Krone has joined the company’s Strategic Advisory Board (SAB) to extend its expertise in the area of risk management.  

After co-founding Kivu Consulting in 2009, Winston acted as the company’s Global Managing Director in San Francisco and the Netherlands, before becoming Kivu’s Chief Research Officer in 2021. He has extensive experience in computer forensics and investigations, employment law, and theft of trade secrets. Winston is also a Senior Advisor at the Centre for Risk Studies at Cambridge University’s Judge Business School. Prior to joining Kivu, he worked as an attorney both in private practice and intergovernmental organisations in Africa and Eastern Europe.

The SAB’s purpose is to guide, provide counsel, and offer diverse viewpoints and challenges to the company’s executive team as it formulates future strategies and make critical decisions and investments. The SAB assists in sustaining the company’s leading position in a complex and fast-evolving sector, while also working to minimise risks to the business. 

SAB members provide:  

  • Expertise and insights: with their rich knowledge of the security industry and market, the SAB helps identify potential threats, develop effective strategies, and make informed decisions 
  • Business strategy: the SAB provides guidance on market trends, the competitive landscape, and new technologies – something that can be crucial in the fast-paced cyber security industry 
  • Innovation and growth: the SAB brings fresh outside perspectives, helping to drive growth and innovation in the company 
  • Counsel to specific customers, providing them with a wealth of invaluable advice and support throughout their cyber security journey. 

A wealth of security expertise and experience  

Quorum Cyber’s SAB members have extensive expertise and experience across the whole cyber security domain. They are: 

  • Robert Hayes, Chair of the SAB. Bob spent 30 years working in senior positions in the UK Government, followed by 10 years as a Senior Fellow of the Microsoft Institute for Advanced Technology in Governments. Bob now acts as a non-executive director and advisor to several organisations. 
  • Lesley Kipling, Chief Security Advisor at Microsoft. Lesley brings deep experience in security incident response, computer security, forensic investigations, and crisis management, and holds a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Forensic Computing from Cranfield University.  
  • David Aucsmith, a former naval officer and scientist in the US intelligence community, who is a Senior Principal Research Scientist at the Applied Physics Laboratory of the University of Washington and an Affiliate Professor of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington. For 14 years, David was Senior Director for Microsoft’s Institute for Advanced Technology in Governments. 
  • Andy Ellis, a former US Air Force officer and graduate of MIT, and a business executive with deep expertise in security, having led Akamai’s security as it created a billion-dollar cyber security business. 
  • Winston Krone, former Global Managing Director and Chief Research Officer at Kivu Consulting, and Senior Risk Advisor at the Cambridge Centre for Risk Studies, he was Managing Director of Computer Investigations at SafirRosetti, and has 10 years’ experience as an attorney in private and governmental practice.
