In our upcoming webinar on 22nd January 2026, Inside Job: Tackling Insider Risks with Microsoft Data SecurityLeon Butler, our Solutions Director for Data Security, and Maha AbuRumman, a Technical Specialist at Microsoft, will discuss the entomology of an insider threat, what an insider threat means, and, more importantly, how to stop it. The webinar is part of our Data Dilemma series.

While organisations are generally getting better at strengthening their cyber security posture, many still don’t put information into context when they think about data security and insider threats.

Our research shows that of the different types of data security breaches we see today:

  • 88% are down to human error
  • 54% are due to negligent actions
  • 34% are due to mis-delivery of information.

On average, it takes organisations 86 days to contain an incident caused by insiders – that’s a long time for adversaries to steal sensitive data.

“While organisations may detect several indicators of misconduct or human error, most do not effectively integrate these observations or contextualise the data collected into actionable insights that clarify risk,” says Leon.

During the webinar, Maha and Leon will explain what a data security journey looks like and why the best approach to prevent user-focused insider threats is to take incremental steps.

User-focused insider threats include:

  • Departing employees: People leaving the company might take sensitive information with them, perhaps to help with their next role, or even out of spite
  • Negligent workers: Team members who skip basic security steps or mishandle content can accidentally put important data at risk
  • Security evaders: Some employees try to bypass security rules because they find them annoying, which can open the door to potential breaches
  • Inside agents: Individuals who are influenced by outside groups may end up exposing data, intentionally or not, for personal benefit
  • Third-party vendors: External partners with access to internal systems can also create risk, whether through simple mistakes or deliberate misuse of information.

During the 45-minute webinar, attendees will learn about:

  • The insider risk scenarios most organisations are dealing with today
  • How Microsoft Purview and Insider Risk Management can give you real visibility and control through contextual analysis of user behaviour
  • Real-world insider threat cases – and what could have stopped them
  • How you can apply a ‘Crawl, Walk, Run’ maturity model to build a stronger data governance approach.

They will also be invited to our Data Security Assessment Workshop to help kick-start strategy and speed up results.
