Following the success of its first higher education roundtable in London, Quorum Cyber held its second event on 12th September 2024, at the University of Glasgow, Scotland.
‘CyberED: A Higher Education Roundtable on Cyber Security’ brought together higher education leaders from across the country (and beyond!) to the University of Glasgow, to discuss cyber-attack prevention in the higher education sector.
Robust cyber security in the higher education sector is essential to protect sensitive data, maintain academic integrity, comply with regulations, and safeguard intellectual property, all while preventing disruptions and upholding the institution’s reputation and financial stability. It ensures a secure environment for innovation and global collaboration, fostering trust among students, faculty, and partners.
This roundtable event, hosted by Quorum Cyber and University of Glasgow, provided the perfect opportunity for higher education professionals to discuss common themes and challenges the sector faces when it comes to being cyber secure, and how to mitigate them. Quorum Cyber’s Matt Newington, Principal Data Security Consultant, discussed AI’s role in protecting academic data and explained the synergies between Microsoft Copilot and Microsoft Purview. He also advised how to create a safer digital environment for every day practice and how to enhance information protection.
Jack Alexander, Senior Threat Intelligence Consultant at Quorum Cyber, explored emerging threats in the current threat landscape. He discussed how upcoming geopolitical events could impact the higher education sector and shared valuable tips for strengthening defences against potential threats.
This roundtable also featured a guest speaker slot the University of Glasgow’s CISO, Alun McGlinchey, who shared the University’s experience of working with Quorum Cyber. He discussed how the partnership has aided the institution’s cyber transformation and accelerated the institution’s journey to a robust cyber security model.

Stuart Kelly, Sales Consultant at Quorum Cyber, commented, “The different sessions across the day were very insightful, with some thought-provoking questions asked throughout. A big thanks to the University of Glasgow for providing a fantastic guest speaker session and a magnificent location for today’s event!”
The well-attended event also featured an informal networking lunch and drinks reception, giving delegates a chance to network with one another and learn from each other’s experiences in cyber defences. Overall, the event provided Higher Education leaders with the insight to how powerful Microsoft technologies can be in safeguarding their institution’s digital assets, ensuring a secure learning environment for all.
Attending roundtables like these helps Higher Education leaders stay informed about the latest threats and best practices, enabling them to strategically manage risks, ensure compliance, and foster a culture of security. It also enhances the institution’s reputation, and prepares leaders for effective crisis response, protecting both financial and intellectual resources.
